Penetration Aircraft Skin Trainer (PAST)

The PAST

Airport Professional Services (APS) realized the need for a penetration training device because many airports are purchasing high-reaching penetrating devices, but didn't have realistic and effective means for boom operator training. Most airport fire departments must resort to the use of unsightly scrap aircraft, buses, cargo containers, water barrels, etc., for training.

APS resolved this problem by developing an effective, affordable, and attractive training device, the Penetration Aircraft Skin Trainer (PAST). This product closely approximates the actual height, curvature, and resistance of an aircraft fuselage.

The Federal Aviation Administration saw a demonstration of the PAST in Omaha, Nebraska and then purchased one for their own use. There are now many PAST Trainers in use in the USA, Canada, and overseas. Also, many fire departments have indicated to us that they are either budgeting to purchase the Trainer, or pursuing their purchase through the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program (IAP). The PAST is quickly becoming the training choice for Aircraft Rescue Fire Departments with High Reach Extendable Turrets.

Early in 2005 the ARFF Working Group presented its Technical Achievement Award to Gary Schott, President of APS, for his design and development of such an outstanding hands-on fuselage penetration training device - the PAST.

The PAST has a welded steel frame with aluminum panels that snap tightly onto the frame. The frame is bolted to the concrete foundation. To date, no PAST in service has been damaged by severe weather or other natural elements.

Using the PAST, firefighters can experience realistic training, and airport managers won't have to hide their penetration training from public view.

Consulting Services

Airport Professional Services (APS) has provided services and equipment worldwide. In the beginning APS worked with a team of five other professionals to provide an extensive Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) study for the New Bangkok International Airport in Thailand. Working with the U.S. Trade Development Agency, the American Embassy in Bangkok, and Thai officials APS delivered an ARFF blueprint for the New Bangkok International Airport with a future capacity to safely move approximately 40 million people a year. This was a major undertaking and a very successful one. APS has also recently assisted as a sub contractor for a project in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
