Improve proficiency with repetitive onsite training
PAST 2.0 is the key to effective repetitive onsite training
Practice doesn’t make you perfect but it’s a darn good start.
Repetitive onsite training is the only way to successfully resolve an incident that requires instantaneous and intuitive reactions. If the firefighter is not properly trained on the overall operational characteristics of the HRET, then it just becomes a roof mounted turret.
PAST 2.0 is designed to fill the void that leads to ineffective training and inefficient HRET operation. Since it closely approximates the actual height, curvature, and resistance of a large passenger and cargo aircraft fuselage, it provides a realistic environment for HRET operators to practice real world scenarios. This leads to better operational skills and significantly increases operator confidence.
Since aircraft events have a low frequency, aircraft rescue firefighters are lacking the real world experience needed to gain confidence and improve their skills during an aircraft emergency. This is why hands on repetitive training with onsite training aids such as the PAST 2.0 penetrating and wing assembly training prop is so important for an aircraft rescue firefighter.
Training props allow firefighters to use their ARFF units as close to a real world emergency as possible. This type of hands on training will improve the firefighters confidence, driving skills, and their knowledge on how their ARFF unit will perform during different scenarios.

Develop the muscle memory needed in critical emergencies
Every second in an aircraft emergency counts. Your ARFF firefighters need to know how to operate the controls and switches on their vehicles quickly and efficiently. They need to be able to manipulate the HRET to both high and low positions without fumbling with the controls.
Repetitive training with authentic training tools such as PAST 2.0 builds the operational skills and muscle memory needed to develop an intuitive “feel” for the equipment. By regularly practicing, your firefighters will have confidence in their skills and can make good decisions in an emergency.
During each shift, practice with PAST 2.0 to:
- Develop vehicle and HRET familiarization in your own vehicle
- Build operator confidence
- Improve operational skills
- Train how to manipulate the HRET in and around PAST even without piercing
Reinforce the HRET training from a certified ARFF training facility
When you’ve utilized an offsite training facility, such as DFW Training Center (one of the most comprehensive HRET training program in the industry), you can replicate many fire fighting evolutions and training scenarios at your own facility by installing PAST 2.0.
PAST 2.0 enables you to leverage the knowledge gained from offsite training by practicing the same skills with your own department on your own HRET and your own vehicle. This is critical for the successful and confident use of the HRET.
Increase confidence while preventing injuries and damage to equipment
Poor training in unrealistic conditions can lead to injury and equipment damage when a real event occurs. PAST 2.0 solves the problem by providing a training environment that mirrors real world situations. It ensures that the HRET is operated safely by your ARFF personnel.
Insufficient and unrealistic training lead to:
- A lack of operational familiarization
- A lack of experience penetrating into aircraft grade material leading to poor penetration success rates
- A potential broken piercing nozzle and other equipment damage
- Extended times to extinguish fires due to the inability to efficiently deploy the HRET
- A lack of confidence and increased stress levels for the HRET operator during a real world event
Why is this important?
Several NTSB final reports have cited the lack of training, familiarization, tactical approach and initial set up of the ARFF vehicles with HRETs when responding to aircraft accidents.
